autumn is here? like a question?

posted on October 6th

so the crazy heatwave has abated somewhat… the wind has picked up, the air is a little cooler, and it feels like maybe, just maybe, autumn is now starting for real.

looking around my garden, i see the signs are all there.

the path to my front door looks like this:

the leaves on one of my acers are starting to change colour on the tips:

…while one of the other green acers has changed completely!

this tree (i feel like i should know what it is but i haven’t got a clue…anyone?) has gone from lush and bright green, to crispy, burnt orange, and is full of shiny red berries:

the russet apples are finally ready – and all autumnal coloured, too:

oh, and the..um…strawberries? are coming along nicely too.

wtf.

my strawberries are also making a comeback! …but i’ve put my bikini away and am wearing woolly socks and indoor gloves today, so i guess autumn IS coming. like a statement. :(

your mystery tree looks a little bit like my hawthorn, but with bigger leaves and no thorns. perhaps is’s a “big haw”?

Fiona you mustn’t call it that to it’s face ^_^
Yay for Autumn! Hot chocolate and lazy days are now acceptable! And jumping in piles of orange leaves and wearing my cowl neck sweater!! Yay!

  3. Sal says:

    hahahahaaa!
well done bex for make me snort hot tea!

and yes, yay for all of the cosy things. i like to be cosy :)

  4. bexi k says:

Yay for more tea snorkling too! Cosiness is next to something something.
Oooo saw your xmassy bits, loverly! Shall absolutely be stomping feet and demanding that the hubby gets some of your pretties for me ^_^ x

    *erm*

you mean to tell me that acers do not lose their leaves in autumn? well (*ahem* high summer if we’re being honest, it’s been a good few weeks since mine lost the last of it’s foliage. I say “lost its foliage”, I mean the leaves curled up and crisped away)

I thought it was all preparation for a winter sleep.

  6. Lizzie says:

I think Kerry’s Acer has “can’t be arsed to water the plants” disease….

Don’t know what your tree is – could it be one of that mysterious variety called an “Idunno Tree”?

Autumn is here for sures… it’s a bit chilly today and I wish I had put socks on. Maybe it’s time for more tea. And cookies.

Anyway, gtg – cat is shouting at me. I must’ve done something wrong -again!

    Enjoy jumping in the leaves.

  7. Sal says:

ag yes but kerry, don’t forget i am that much further north than you..soo..um… the season..something something..earlier. or something.

  8. Kerry says:

ooooooh…so it’s not my lack lustre gardening non-skills um…thing. (putting it in the wrong sort of compost at first, for most of it’s short time with me probably didn’t help, but like you say, I am further south)

    I did water.
*when I remembered* —> maybe me being further south is causing my early onset dementia. As it sweeps upwards across the UK in a maddening arc of forgetfulness and unfinished crosswords it will one day reach your parts and your acers will too be found to want for water.

All hope is not lost though. I still have some lovely acer sticks in a pot. So fingers crossed it’ll forgive me and bring the leaves back.

    probably not though

  9. Sal says:

omg, yes! your arc theory is totally plausible and worrisome! clearly we will have to all move to the north of scotland to outrun it! or the south of france? i’m not sure which. its like the clocks thing all over again. *confuses self*

ps i’m sure your acers will be FINE. *cough*

  10. bexi k says:

Kerry, oh no, I am in Somerset :-( *worries*

  11. fiona says:

kerry, if it wasn’t so AUTUMNAL outside, i would take a photo of my crazy-ass acer for you.
i will just descibe it instead: most of the leaves are dead crispy brown (from the mini-drought at the beginning of summer)
then in august an inner layer grew back, but red leaves (it’s a green acer) as if it was late autumn.
and last sunday, some beautiful, fresh, green spring-like leaves emerged.

so i’m sure yours will be fine too. at some point.
