when i am not drawing and painting, i am usually sanding and painting. or, constructing and painting. come to think of it, pretty much everything i do involves some kind of painting or another.

though my favourite kind is watercolour painting.

but last week my medium of choice was B&Q own-brand timbercare.

because our fence fell over in some bad weather a while ago (ok, over a year ago) and had been propped up with some random bits of wood ever since. we eventually got round to replacing it with some new posts and panels earlier this year.

well, a mere 54763245876 coats later, and the new fence has come up a treat, i think!

please to admire it’s shiny new coat(s) of delightful forest green. i thank you.

with that finished, this week i have mostly been favouring wickes water-based primer and undercoat in brilliant white.

i know, i know, the fun just never stops, right?!

but, we finally, fiiiinally managed to finish construction of the cupboard from hell. this under stair cupboardular area has been a mathematical nightmare from start to finish and probably deserves a blog entry all of it’s own, i’m just not sure i can be arsed to write a blog entry all about a cupboard.

i am such a massive DIY nerd though, i may just have to write an entire blog entry all about the cupboard.

anyway, 3 coats of undercoat, half a tube of gripfill, the ubiquitous patching, filling and sanding completed, and it is about ready for the final couple of layers of topcoat!

i am so excited to get this finished so that i never have to deal with it again! and i am on the home stretch! whoo!

so anyway then i was thinking, you know what i really feel like making? another batch of my zombie rocks. because it will be nice, enjoyable - therapeutic even - to make a bunch of those.

hey. i think i might have just realised i don’t even like painting.

boxes always make me feel a little bit uneasy, ever since watching the movie “seven”.

i look at them and of course the voice inside my head wails: “what’s in the box, what’s in the bo-o-ox?”

anyhoo, i took a deep breath and sliced the box open with a knife. (i kept the knife handy, just in case.)

well! i was just THRILLED to discover there was no severed head inside the box, but this little lady instead!

and she was just dying to get out and make herself at home.

which she did. plonking herself on the corner of my desk to survey her new surroundings with her one good eye.

then she spied byron, and it was undead zombie love at first singular-eyed sight!

for who could possibly resist that lanky-legged stripey handsome devil?

and she now sits right along side him, pride of place above my desk, where i can gaze upon their wonderful prettyness and perfection all day :)

(and also keep an eye on them, make sure they aren’t running around the house armed with butcher knives, chucky-style.)

(i think maybe i watch too many films.)

so, spring was nice, for those couple of days the other week! no really, i thoroughly enjoyed it.

for a brief window of time, i was able to enjoy the plum blossom in the evening sunlight

and marvel at the ridiculously gorgeous cherry blossom

appreciate the white of the plum blossom against the blue of a virtually cloudless sky

and the delicate prettyfulness of new blossoms blossoming in the warm weather

…thank goodness i took a few pictures to remember it by!

farewell spring, you were lovely while you lasted.

so it was my birthday during the bank holiday weekend – knowing it fell on a bank holiday, i assumed the weather would be a bit rubbish and raining, so imagine my surprise when in fact i got a day like this!

blue skies and sunshine was a pretty perfect start to the day!

love it! not that i was going to do much cooking in it of course, as it was my birthday. so, cooking was the misters job.

he enjoys that sorta thing though so it’s all good – especially if it is real MAN COOKING.

see! see how he burns things with fire!

(including, at one mildly alarming stage, the actual patio and a small section of the lawn. but the less said about that little incident, the better, right??)

what an amazing day. awesome weather, gifts, dinner, and a fire show – i am just the luckiest girl!

and i’m sure the grass will grow back eventually.

so i think i mentioned before about the little sketchbook i keep next to my bed. this is because for some reason, midnight is when i’m feeling most creative. and 1am. and 2am.

i used to lie in bed trying to get to sleep, battling against my brain who always has other ideas - it always seems to be all perky and wide awake from about 11pm onwards: “no, no, don’t go to sleep – why don’t you think about THIS THIS AND THIS! and THIS!”

and i’m all like “no, shush brian! it’s time for sleep!” and my brain is all: “hey! no! what are you doing? you don’t want to sleep - why not think about THIS and THIS and THIS INSTEAD! also, pandas! panda hats! ooh, pandas in panda hats!  also, here’s the same line of a song you hate, playing over and over and over again.”

my brain loves to torture me.

but, occasionally it conjures up an idea that i like – random ideas for illustrations just spring into my mind in the most random of ways at the most random of times.

i used to think i would remember these ideas come morning, but i had forgotten that my brain is also a sieve made of soft cheese, and retains nothing.

hence my bright idea to keep a sketchbook on my bedside table!

i started doodling the things floating around in my brain – no more waking up in the mornings struggling to remember rambling thoughts from the night before!

ingenious.

not all of my illustrations start out this way – i have a(nother) sketchbook which is technically my “for proper” one. it lives on my desk and i generally scribble ideas down into that, or use it to work out some rough ideas during the working day. this little sketchbook is just for those random middle-of-the-night type thoughts and ideas, and it has come in super handy.

i like flicking back through it to compare the originals to the finished pieces, and i hope you have enjoyed seeing them too!

i love this time of year. lighter evenings, warmer sunshine (sometimes!) and nature starting to wake up.

i’ve enjoyed seeing the buds on the silver birch outside my window getting big and fat and green

until they suddenly burst open

all new and green and fresh!

my favourite favourite of course though…

is my beloved cherry blossom. i adore the deep hot pink of those buds, right before they flower

ooh and last but not least…

i seriously dig those colours.

spring is very definitely sproinging at last and i’m enjoying watching it get underway!

however the mister is in the middle of a huge work-related computing thingummyjig, which meant he had to work all weekend. shame for him, but i kind of enjoy it when he is otherwise occupied, because it means i can totally please myself! i wasn’t quite sure what to do with myself, in fact. i could’ve taken a couple of days off to lie on the couch watching romcoms and chick flicks and eating my body-weight in easter eggs… however it turns out that when i do have some time off, all to myself, all i really want to do is…more drawing!

i decided to use the time to catch up on a couple of pieces i’ve been wanting to work on for ages.

i’ve had the rough outlines done for ages, but put aside as i just haven’t had the time to work them up until now.

and i’ve just been dying to get to work on my lovely tits :)

all fnar-fnar humour aside, this was a real first for me as they are sort-of realistic – well, the markings and colours, anyway – which is not something i usually do with my little birds.

i actually used a reference book. usually when i’m drawing stuff i just wing it (no pun intended) and hope for the best, but i really wanted to have a pair of perfect tits (mildly humourous double entendre absolutely intended.)

i’m really happy with how they turned out and will definitely be making a few more!

next up was my little skull sisters:

first the inking and linework…

then onto some careful painting…

(i seriously need a smaller brush, this klunky thing is so…klunky.)

they take many hours to complete as they’re super fiddly and have so much tiny detail, but i love every second i spend working on them!

i’m happy to say both pieces sold within minutes – the birds have flown off to beautiful wales, and the skull sisters are off to sunny california. i hope their new owners enjoy looking at them as much as i enjoyed creating them.

definitely a weekend ‘off’ well spent!

smooth glazes…rough clay…the shapes..the textures…the beautiful hand-made-ness… and the colours! oh, the colours.

so when i spotted this little bowl, while pootling around folksy one evening, i knew i had to have it.

as always with fabulous folksy purchases, it arrived quickly and i was soon holding it in my hands.

no really, i literally just sat and cuddled it for a little while. it’s so tactile!

and those beautiful colours! and the way the glazes have run and pooled together… they make me want to dive in.

my head is bursting with all the lovely descriptive words i want to say about this little dish but the only one that keeps popping out is:

YUM.

yum, yum, yum.

i’m definitely going to have to go back for more! because i’m pretty sure it’s not possible to own too many hand crafted pottery items.

so we usually spend the easter weekend doing a whole heap of DIY, and/or coping with various DIY disasters and/or fallouts.

(like for eg last year, when we accidentally broke a radiator pipe and spent easter sunday mopping things with sodden towels, waiting for an emergency plumber to come and rescue us)

well, not this year! oh no – we decided, what with one thing and another, we would actually take the weekend off. like totally off. treat it like a holiday, like normal people probably do. (do they though? i wouldn’t know. this is all i know.)

the mister and i have both been working 24/7 lately, so we planned to spend all 4 days of the easter break vegetating – do absolutely nothing, and just enjoy the rest.

however! so far we have spent the break catching up on a weeks worth of housework, clearing out the loft, ebaying the stuff from the loft, catching up on some custom work (me) and catching up on some computing work (him), endless washing up (seriously? where do all the plates and cutleries keep coming from? we’ve been eating crisps for dinner) clearing up the garden, general wallying around, and trips to the DIY shop. not to DO DIY of course because we are ON HOLIDAY but we still needed to go and exchange some stuff and get some other bits, ready for when we get back to the DIYing.

and then plus also there was that whole horrible time slip thing where the clocks changed and i am no good with things like adapting to change and time travel and all of that and so it has left me feeling slightly discombobulated and also panicky about the fact we are not RELAXING TO OUR FULL POTENTIAL! *panics*

and now i feel like i only have a few hours left to cram in 4 days worth of vegetating!
it’s beginning to stress me out a little bit, i need to go and crack on!

(next year i think i will just build a shed or paint a fence or something, it’s way more satisfying than this resting lark)

ok, it’s been a little rabbit-heavy, i notice. but then, easter IS coming.

friday afternoon, i was supposed to start working on some sugar skulls…. so i made a zombiemarie antoinette instead. it’s good to make use of my procrastinationing - at least i made something, right?
i have NO idea which weird recess of my brain she sprang forth from; she just kind of tumbled out the end of my pen during one of my late night / 2am doodling sessions, as a rough sketch, and i couldn’t concentrate on anything else until i had worked her up neatly into a finished piece.

i’m glad i made her though, as i rather like her!

i like her even more because i was contacted by someone in ukraine who, on seeing my picture on facebook, emailed to say how my drawing reminded her of a friends childhood photo. i was curious to see what she meant, and when she sent me a copy of the photo, i could hardly believe it.

the similarities were very striking and it almost looks as though i have used the photo to draw from! i love how the features are all the same – the long eyelashes, the scrunched up eyes, and that big beautiful grin!!

she explained that: “she is dressed as Malvina (a blue-haired doll from Russian tale by Alex Tolstoy “Buratino”, Russian adaptation of Pinocchio)”.

i absolutely love the little story behind this random coincidence and, as the lady who contacted me says, “‘what an awesome coincidence that in this huge world, we noticed each other!”

…a really sweet end to the week :)

up next: sugar skulls! honestly.

because, ok, right. get a cuppa, have a seat, this is a long one.

so. i bought a new computer just before christmas as my old one was seriously on its last legs and i thought if i got it all set up over christmas break, then i could start the new year all fine and dandy and fixed up with my new machine. new year new me and all that, but oh! oh no! the new machine, after getting it completely set up and all installed and copying all of my files and programs etc over, well, it decided to develop a very loud static-y high pitching humming whining buzzing noise the whole time it was on.

despite spending TWO FULL ACTUAL HOURS on a premium rate phone call to “customer services” in india, and dismantling the new machine under instruction from india, so that it lay in pieces all over the room, and even holding the phone up to where we ‘thought the noise might be coming from’ (not helpful, man in india!), we were unable to locate the problem. after a few days’ worth of more phone calls and wrangling and the promise of technicians being sent to us to re-dismantle the computer for us and then the cancelling of the technicians due to the parts not being in stock (whut! you are a computer company!) and then the re-scheduling maybe of the technicians and yaddayaddayadda, i just decided to send the faulty computer back in hopes of a working replacement. because i didnt really want a new computer that had been pulled apart several times and clearly had issues. well, they can’t just replace it – they have to cancel the sale and we would have to re-purchase the replacement once the refund had cleared back into my account. and what if THAT one also runs with a high pitched static-y whiny buzzing hum?, i did wonder. will we have to spend another £10 phone call to india while they try and diagnose the fault over the phone etcetcetc? i was worried i would be PUT ON HOLD FOR A FULL HALF AN HOUR OF PREMIUM RATE LONG DISTANCE PHONE CALL AGAIN. (yeah, that happened too.) am i just going to be trapped in a big fat dell well-known-computer-company infinity loop? i did wonder. i must also just mention that even if it was straightforward, swapping computers is a massive upheaval for a terrible hoarder of all the things such as myself. also i was losing entire days to sorting this out. so anyway, we wiped the new computer of all the things we’d loaded onto it (oh, and by WE i mean my poor long suffering ever faithful IT monkey, obviously) and sent it back. very luckily i hadn’t gotten rid of my old on-its-last-legs computer, so we re-re installed all the things back onto that, so that i could get some work done while the new broken computer got returned, and i tried to decide what i was going to do. i had just spent a week CRYING about having to get used to using windows 8 – which of course comes as standard with new computers nowadays – have you used it? it is TRULY THE MOST GODAWFUL THING IN THE HISTORY OF THE WORLD EVER. you may think i am being a little dramatic, but actually it’s true. it sucks the big one. so, bearing all that in mind, i decided to take the mister up on his very kind offer to build me a new computer, instead of buying an off-the-shelf one again. it’s a hobby of his anyway, and, that way, i would be able to get windows 7 to work on it instead of 8. which totally swung it for me because, did i mention? windows 8 sucks big time. i actually don’t know enough sweary adjectives to begin to describe it’s awfullness.

so in the end, the parts did arrive, the machine got built, and eventually it was all set up ready to be switched on. another full weekend was then spent setting up all the software, and copying the files over from my old computer AGAIN, and wiping the old one AGAIN, etcetc.

it worked well! we did rejoice!

…then the mister realised he had set it up a bit wrong, and so we had to wipe it all and re set it up again (i kid you not) – but for the (hopefully!) absolute final time this time!!!

bit of a long story, and i have done you a favour by cutting an even longer story short, in fact! 3 months worth or setting up and un setting up and re setting up and that is currently where we are at. i like my new home made computer, it is shiny. more importantly it works beautifully and does not have sies poefies windows 8 installed anywhere upon it, so it runs like a total sense-making dream. also, it is QUIET. so quiet in fact i don’t even know it’s on. *rejoicing*.  after much disruption, i am all set up and ready to go, firing on all cylinders. boyfriend is a life saver and sanity saviour <3

so ok, i hope you just love reading my blog updates where i talk about nothing other than drawing and painting rocks, because that is all i have been doing and that is all you will be getting!

but, i have had a lot to draw, yo!

i got the third batch of zombie rocks finished! here they are all tucked up in their little cardboard beds:

(i stole this diplay idea from the lovely helen over at kindred rose  - she got a zombie rock for her birthday and displayed it thusly and so i stole her idea as i am all shameless n stuff like that.)

making them is the best fun, but photographing, editing and listing is the most boringest (yes boringest) chore of a job ever and it all takes sooo very long. i was very glad to get it all finished and very pleased to sell quite a few of them straight away.

i’m an idiot but i get kind of attached to those vacant, gurning little faces and was even a little bit sad to see a couple of them go – i know they have gone to good homes though!

gawd, anyone would think i was selling a box of puppies. i know, i know, get a grip.

anyhoo, i have a few left and they are available HERE if you think you might like one.

although i don’t usually take on custom orders, i sometimes do the odd one if i can squeeze it in, depending on what else i’ve got on.

i was contacted by a lady from all the way down under in australia, who, having seen my work on facebook, asked if she could commission a couple of zombie rocks for 2 of her friends who live in the uk.

she sent me such a lovely message explaining what she wanted and the reasons behind it, so i got straight to work creating hamilton and alfonse.

…each going off to their respective new owners with a little card full of lovely sentiments.

i really enjoyed making them, too. i trust (hope!) the recipients will get a pleasant surprise when they drop through the letterbox :D

alfonse is travelling up to his new digs in edinburgh, and hamilton has gone to live on a houseboat!

another custom request i had was for a zombie panda, also to be a surprise gift from one friend to another.

i’ve done normal pandas before, so it was no trouble to zombify one:

…and finally, in other news: somewhere in between drawing all the things, we built a new fence. because the wonky old one blew over and kind of disintegrated.

i like it, it is shiny.

and just as soon as it stops raining, i will get out there and paint it.

1. i have a new computer. (<- i would explain about how it has taken 3 months to finally be able to say that, but that is a whole other blog post full of swearwords in itself.)

i like it, it is shiny.

i don’t adapt to change very well though and so it is taking me a while to find my way around and learn all the new buttons, but i am making progress and managing to get by.

2. i have been trying to draw lots of things to stock up my shops.
this week, i ‘ave mostly been drawing geishas. and a couple of red pandas.

zombie geishas are the best kind of geisha, don’t you think?

3. i sneak a little black heart into all of my artwork now. (well, when i remember to, that is.)

it’s kind of like a signature of sorts but without scruffying up an illustration with my scruffy great actual signature all over it.

4. i keep a sketchbook next to my bed because my brain always has ideas for things at around 2 o’clock in the morning.

the weather was glorious and spring like:

clear blue skies and relatively warm sunshine, too.
i was even able to potter around in the garden in flip flops for a while, which is a nice novelty for feet after a long winter wrapped in layers of socks and boots!

the snowdrops have been up for a couple of weeks now, but this is the first time i have felt like going over the doorstep to photograph them.

so glad i bothered, they looked gorgeous bobbing around in the gentle breeze and watery sunlight. they smelled delicious too – i never realised quite how strongly fragranced they were, until i shoved my face into them.

mostly i just love how they look so crisp and clean and fresh and white!
divine.

there were bulbs everywhere i looked actually, which is always a nice affirmation that yes, spring is definitely on it’s way. because sometimes, when winter draaaaags on,  it doesn’t feel like it’s ever going to happen!

i love this time of year, with fresh new growth forcing it’s way up and out all over the place!
(i think these are going to be bluebells.)

a bit of sunshine does wonders for everything, including productivity; over the course of the weekend we were able to do an entire weeks worth of neglected housework in just an hour (me), make 3 cupboard doors (him) and have the in-laws over for lunch. (hence the frenzied housework session.)

we managed to get caught up on a few other random bits and pieces, and squeezed in 4 sandra bullock films too, so all in all it was a very productive and enjoyable weekend indeed.

…going out is so totally overrated, no?

2 days ago, i said to him: “ok for serious now, you SWEAR you haven’t gotten me anything for valentines day, right?”

him: “i swears.”

me: “because, we don’t DO valentines day. do we.”

him: “no.”

me: “also, i have seriously got nothing for you – so i really do hope you haven’t gotten anything for me.”

him: “no, no. i promise.”

and, i can ALWAYS tell when he’s lying – he’s really bad at it. and i could tell that on this occasion, he was totally telling the truth.

upon waking this morning, there was a little parcel on my bedside table.

me: “noooooo what is this! i thought we weren’t doing valentines..you promised!”

him: “well, i lied. happy valentines day!”

me: ” but i didn’t get you anything!”

him: “you never do.” <- ARGH!

me: “what isss ittt”

him: “just a load of old bollocks.”

me: “oooh! dvd’s! what’s this one? a keanu film? i love keanu! is it speed?”

him: “well… not quite.”

(the lake house. not speed, apparently.)
